White Rose Centre for Enterprise (WRCE) was set up in October 1999 with £2.9M
funding from the Government's Science Enterprise Challenge fund. It involves
the White Rose Universities - Leeds, Sheffield and York - with Sheffield acting
as the lead institution.
WRCE has the twin objectives of (1) increasing the enterprise content of undergraduate
and post graduate courses and (2) of increasing the rate of technology transfer
and in particular, the rate of spin out of new companies.
- Aims to promote curriculum changes by fostering enterprise, enabling
the development of an effective network with business in the region and
supporting the development of new teaching and learning material. About
a quarter of the funds are specifically available for learning based projects
in academic departments, with further funding for support staff and commercial
links organised by the Centre itself.
- Aims to increase the entrepreneurial competency of graduates, postgraduates
and research staff. An ongoing programme of funding for enterprise course
development is well underway. A team of Enterprise
Learning Managers are available to help develop ideas. For more information
on the enterprise learning programme, click here.
- Runs a Business Development Programme, to assist in the increase in
the number of university spin-out companies. Business
Development Managers and mentors are available to assist and advise
at each university.
- Runs an annual Business Plan Competition for students across the three
universities, with up to £25,000 in prize money and mentoring available
for winners. For more information, click here.
